An exciting opportunity exists to join the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Service as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Officer (Emergency Department). The role provides culturally appropriate support, advocacy and practical assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers, supporting informed decision‑making, improving health outcomes and reducing DAMA. Flexible 7‑day rostering and work across Cairns Hospital may be required.

About us:

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Service provides advocacy and a cultural link between health professionals, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander inpatients, families, and carers at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service facilities. They can break down communication barriers so that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers can better understand the hospitalisation, appropriate treatment, and discharge needs.

About your opportunity:

  • Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in relation to their needs while patients of Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service to facilitate culturally appropriate health care and improve health outcomes for patients and their families.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and liaise with relevant community agencies, support networks and accommodation services. Identify gaps in services and/or resources and where appropriate assist with service/resource development.
  • Participate in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service activities such as in-service programmes, business plan activities, staff meetings, statistical collection/collation and record keeping.
