The Office of the Director-General and Department of Health is responsible for managing the public health system in Queensland, including: regulating health services; monitoring, developing and deploying programs to improve the health of Queenslanders; coordinating health services through Hospital and Health Services and non-government organisations; providing ambulance services via the Queensland Ambulance Service; and working with other state and national agencies on policies and programs to improve the health of Queenslanders.

The Internal Audit Unit (IAU) strengthens the Department's ability to create dynamic and responsive health system by providing independent, risk-based and objective assurance, advice, insight and foresight.

About the role:

The Principal Internal Auditor will play a key role in delivering all aspects of internal audit functions from audit planning, execution, report writing and follow-up of internal audit recommendations.

As a Principal Internal Auditor, you will contribute to the development of an annual internal audit plan that provides for the effective coverage of the Department's operations and considers current and emerging risks. You will also conduct and manage complex operational, financial and compliance audits, health checks and advisory engagements (collectively, internal audit engagements) across the Department to assess the design and effectiveness of internal controls (i.e., financial, non-financial and/or IT) and to determine compliance with legislative and departmental requirements and/or alignment with professional/industry standards.

Other key responsibilities include:

• Lead and manage internal audit teams (including co-sourced teams) to ensure the successful delivery and completion of internal audit engagements.
• Prepare high quality written reports and briefs and present outcomes of internal audit engagements to clients, management and stakeholders.
• Assist in planning and development of quarterly Audit and Risk Committee and Executive Leadership Team reporting
• Assist the Internal Audit Unit Leadership team in providing fit for purpose advice to executives, senior management, staff and project boards / steering committees / governance forums in relation to governance, risk management and design and operating effectiveness of internal controls.

Role fit:

The ideal candidate brings proven experience planning and managing complex internal audit engagements, leading audit teams to deliver high‑quality outcomes efficiently. You communicate with impact, producing clear audit reports and confidently engaging with stakeholders and governance forums. Strong research, analytical, and problem‑solving skills are essential, along with the ability to apply innovative thinking and modern techniques to evaluate complex issues and provide practical recommendations. The role also calls for someone who builds strong stakeholder relationships and works collaboratively to achieve shared goals.

While not mandatory, a bachelor's or master's degree, preferably in accounting, finance, business administration or a relevant field will be highly regarded.
