Join our team as a Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Coordinator, where you will play a key role in fostering safe, healthy and inclusive school environments.

This position supports 2 secondary schools, Townsville State High School and Pimlico State High School by strengthening local health, safety and wellbeing practices in line with the Department of Education systems and legislative requirements.

We are seeking a proactive and organised professional with strong communication skills, the ability to build effective relationships, and a commitment to promoting psychologically and physically safe workplaces.

About Us:

Pimlico State High School is a large co-educational independent public high school in Townsville, known for its strong academic focus and diverse curriculum for Years 7-12. With around 1,700 students, it offers a wide range of academic and vocational pathways, alongside well-regarded excellence programs, particularly in music and performing arts, and a global education focus that prepares students for international opportunities.

Townsville State High School is one of North Queensland's oldest secondary schools, established in 1924 and located in Railway Estate. Catering for Years 7-12, it provides a supportive learning environment with a broad curriculum, strong science and academic programs, and opportunities such as advanced (vertical) learning and extracurricular activities including sport and cultural initiatives.

Step Into Your Next Chapter:

In this role, you will provide expert advice and practical support to school leaders and staff across a range of WHS functions.

This includes risk management, incident reporting and review, workplace inspections and audits, emergency preparedness, and compliance with the department's Health, Safety and Wellbeing Management System (HSWMS).

The role also contributes to building a strong safety culture through staff training, inductions and awareness initiatives, while supporting schools in managing critical incidents, occupational violence and aggression, and fire safety compliance (including Fire Safety Advisor responsibilities).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely, confidential WHS advice to school leadership and staff
  • Support implementation and compliance with the HSWMS
  • Assist with audits, inspections, hazard management and emergency preparedness
  • Monitor WHS data to identify trends and recommend improvements
  • Deliver WHS training, inductions and awareness activities
  • Support management of critical incidents, including occupational violence and aggression
  • Provide reporting and recommendations to inform safety strategies
  • Fulfil Fire Safety Advisor responsibilities as required

The Perfect Fit:

We are seeking a candidate who can demonstrate:

  • Proven knowledge of workplace health and safety practices, legislation, and risk management frameworks
  • Experience supporting or coordinating injury management, rehabilitation and return-to-work programs* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to analyse data, identify risks and implement practical, evidence-based solutions* High level organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines* Experience delivering training, facilitating awareness activities, or building capability in WHS practices
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering safe, inclusive and respectful workplaces
