About SMHRU 

The SMHRU unit offers mental health rehabilitation services for individuals needing extended inpatient care in a secure environment. Our focus is on autonomy, self-determination, and working collaboratively towards independent living. All consumers are over 18 years of age.

About Your New Role

Are you passionate about advocating for mental health services and promoting respectful inclusion? A rare and exciting opportunity has become available for a Peer Worker (Identified – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Mental Health Lived Experience) to join our team. Our new facility aims to provide world-class, compassionate, person-centered mental health care that supports the recovery of consumers, families, and carers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support consumers along their personal recovery journey whilst appropriately sharing your own personal lived experience of mental ill-health, service use and healing/recovery
  • Provide peer support, practical assistance, education, information and referrals to consumers
  • Maintain and grow partnerships with a range of stakeholders
  • Develop and deliver recovery-oriented training and education for consumers

Qualifications

To be successful in this position you will require:

  • Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community
  • Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be a person with lived experience of mental illness, service use and recovery
  • While not mandatory, a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or similar is highly desired
  • While not mandatory, experience working as a Peer Worker in a public mental is highly desirable
  • Evidence of vaccination, or be able to be vaccinated against and remain vaccinated against - Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis and Hepatitis B
  • Tuberculosis screening, to identify if the tuberculosis vaccination may be required
  • Declaration of serious discipline history must be disclosed
  • Criminal History Screening will be required for new employees (GCH will cover cost)

Salary

  • Permanent full time or permanent part time (one full time position or several part time positions, hours negotiable)
  • Base salary ranging from $79 727 - $88 158 per annum or $39.98 - $44.46 per hour
