As a Community Education Counsellor at Maroochydore State High School, you will play a vital role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to engage, succeed and thrive in their education.

Working closely with students, families, school staff and community, you'll help create a culturally safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide culturally responsive counselling and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across the school and local network
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with students, families and community to support engagement, attendance and wellbeing
  • Develop and deliver targeted programs and activities that strengthen participation in education
  • Provide cultural advice and guidance to school staff and leadership to support inclusive practices and protocols
  • Promote cross-cultural understanding and awareness within the school community
  • Connect students and families with external services and community supports
  • Contribute to the delivery of programs that improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

What you will bring:

  • A strong connection to and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures, communities and perspectives
  • Experience working with young people, families or communities in education, youth or community settings
  • The ability to build trust and develop meaningful relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to advocate for student needs
  • A genuine commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

It would be great if you also have:

  • Qualifications or training in counselling, youth work, community services or a related field
  • Experience working in a school or education environment
  • Experience delivering programs, workshops or cultural awareness training
  • Knowledge of local community services and support networks

Mandatory requirement:

This is an identified role. It is a genuine occupational requirement that applicants are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in accordance with the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld).
