Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) plays a leadership role in the biosecurity system in collaboration with its stakeholders. BQ leads the Queensland Government's efforts to protect our way of life, environment, biodiversity, human and animal health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats.
Through supporting the collective efforts of our stakeholders and all Queenslanders, BQ will continue to protect our state and Australia from emerging plant and animal pests and diseases and effectively manage existing ones.
Animal Biosecurity and Welfare (ABW) supports BQ's efforts to prevent, prepare, respond to and recover from diseases threatening livestock industries and maintaining access to markets. Our people work together to help mitigate biosecurity risks, uphold standards for animal welfare and animal management and lead the overall DPI response to biosecurity emergency incidents to achieve outcomes consistent with the Department's strategic direction for leadership in animal welfare, exhibited animal, animal management and animal ethics policy and service delivery.
As our Senior Veterinarian (Pathology), you will play a vital role in protecting Queensland's animal health and supporting market access through the delivery of high-quality veterinary diagnostic services. Your work will directly contribute to the early detection, diagnosis, and response to animal diseases, helping to safeguard our livestock industries, wildlife and communities.
You will know you're achieving success in the role when you:
• apply specialist veterinary pathology skills to diagnose and respond to animal diseases, supporting surveillance and market access outcomes.
• build strong relationships with stakeholders and colleagues to enhance collaboration, service delivery, and scientific excellence.
• contribute to a high-performing team through mentoring, professional development and readiness to support emergency response activities This role requires the ability to handle livestock and operate a 4WD. Previous field experience with animal welfare and disease investigations is highly regarded. If you do not have field experience, you will bring a good attitude and willingness to learn these aspects of the role.
You will have a keen eye for detail, great time management and effective problem solving skills. More than anything, you will have a positive attitude and make a great contribution to our close-knit and connected team.
There are some qualifications, registrations and vaccinations that we see as essential:
• A degree in Veterinary Science obtained from an Australian university or recognised equivalent.
• Current or eligible registration with the Queensland Veterinary Surgeons Board.
• Post-graduate qualification in veterinary pathology or ANZCVS membership or Diplomate ACVP.
• Vaccination or immunity to Q fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis will be required. Commitment to obtain vaccination or evidence of prior vaccination will be required prior to starting with Biosecurity Queensland.
• Participation in emergency response activities and availability to participate in an on-call roster as out-of-hours work.
