As a Prison Mental Health Indigenous Health Worker you will play a vital role in facilitating supportive and meaningful liaisons between the Central Queensland Prison Mental Health Service and persons with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage who are also open clients of the PMHS.

You will be instrumental in developing and supporting a strong network within the community and mental health services to provide culturally appropriate, respectful and person-centred care. You will liaise with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders across correctional and community environments to coordinate a holistic approach to recovery and wellbeing, particularly during the transition surrounding release from custody.

About us:

The Prison Mental Health Service is responsible for the delivery of mental health services to offenders in the Capricornia Correctional Centre (CCC) and Capricornia Correctional Farm (CCF). There is a fluctuating population of up to 1050 male offenders within CCC and CCF. Offenders can access appropriate mental health care equivalent to the standards of the general community. The Prison Mental Health Service incorporates a multidisciplinary team providing services from the time the Offender enters the system, through transfers to other facilities, through to their release into the community. We work in collaboration with the offender health team to promote the overall health and wellbeing of offenders in general.

About the role:

  • Facilitate access to specialist mental health services through the provision of culturally specific education, support and liaison with the clinical team.
  • Develop and deliver a range of prevention, early intervention, health education and health promotion services to individuals, families and community groups in accordance with the primary health care principles of social justice, access, equity and community participation.
  • Collaborate, consult and liaise with the community, non-government organisations and government agencies in the planning and development of integrated health services and programs.
  • Participate in community development aimed at building community capacity for self-determination in health.

About you:

  • Appointment, and future increment progression, between paypoints HWF3.1 to HWF3.5 requires:
    • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, or
    • Certificate IV in Mental Health, or
    • Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs, or
    • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work.
  • Appointment, and future increment progression, between paypoints HWF3.2 to HWF3.7, or HWF3.8 (limited to employees who meet the requirements of HED 04/23) requires:
    • Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, or
    • Diploma of Mental Health, or
    • Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs
  • Under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), it is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community.
  • You're able to plan, develop and deliver primary mental health care services based on the identified needs of the Aboriginal and Islander community.
  • You have a knowledge and understanding of community development and its importance to improving the health and wellbeing of the Aboriginal and Islander community.

What we offer:

Total remuneration value of up to $9,816 p.m. is comprised of:

  • An hourly rate between $39.00 - $52.06 p.h.
  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
