The assisting clinican:
- provides advice to the Mental Health Court about further inquiries it should make in relation to references to the court;
- provides advice, in court, at the hearing of references or appeals, on the meaning and significance of the clinical evidence before the court;
- provides clinical advice in relation to submissions from the parties about the treatment, care, detention and future needs of a person subject to orders made under the Mental Health Act 2016 and Forensic Disability Act 2011;
- may be invited, from time to time, to present at continuing professional education sessions for the Mental Health Court's stakeholders.
The successful candidate(s) will:
- be a Psychiatric Specialist of substantial standing registered in Australia;
- possess sound knowledge of mental illness and natural mental infirmity, the system for providing mental health treatment in Queensland and issues affecting persons with mental illness or natural mental infirmity;
- possess a sound knowledge of the Queensland forensic system for dealing with offenders who are found to be of unsound of mind or unfit for trial;
- possess an understanding of the rights of those with a mental illness or natural mental infirmity, including the right to natural justice;
- have knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, of the Mental Health Act 2016 and the Forensic Disability Act 2011;
- possess strong interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to relate effectively with the judiciary on psychiatric and related issues.
Four part-time position (working variable hours) is available. The position will commence in March 2027, for a period of up to 3 years.
