Principal Business Services Officer

Operating in the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), as a Principal Business Services Officer, you will be responsible for leading and supervising a team, as well as monitoring workloads in a high-volume registration processing environment. Fair and transparent decision making is imperative in this role.

You will contribute by:

  • Leading, mentoring and supporting staff and ensuring the delivery of high-level service to internal and external clients through timely processing of registration applications.
  • Distributing workloads, establishing clear direction, and modelling appropriate leadership to build a high performing team.
To successfully undertake this role, you will need to have a strong customer focus, have excellent communication skills, be highly motivated and be focused on delivering outcomes.

The team and the branch 

Registration Services (RSU) is responsible for registering incorporated associations, charities, cooperatives and limited partnerships. We also regulate certain funeral benefit businesses and process claims made against the Funeral Benefits Trust Fund. RSU also has a Finance Team which receipts all fees received by post for OFT in Brisbane.

Your key responsibilities

  • Ensuring staff are provided with appropriate direction, guidance, training and assistance on policy and procedures to ensure consistent provision of service delivery. 
  • Monitoring performance standards and achievements of the Unit and contributing to the ongoing improvement of the team's output and performance. 
  • Analysing and interpreting complex legislative matters and providing specialist advice to management and staff on the practical application and implications of the legislation administered by the Unit. 
  • Reviewing and making decisions about the granting, refusal, or cancellation of registration applications under relevant legislation. 
  • Attending hearings of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, facilitating appeals of the Delegate's decisions, providing statements of reasons, and drafting submissions. 

Technical skills, abilities and cultural capability 

  • Makes appropriate decisions based on policies and past precedents. 
  • Holds excellent legislative knowledge, with the ability to interpret legislation to make complex decisions whilst ensuring decisions made in relation to applications are fair, transparent and defendable.  
  • Experience making recommendations/suggestions on changes to work processes or policy/practice changes, implementing the changes and monitoring and reporting on the success or otherwise of the changes. 
  • Contributes to workplace equity, diversity, respect and inclusion that enriches our culture of respect and inclusion. 
  • Establishes and maintains co-operative working relationships with co-workers and the public. 
  • Ability to undertake multiple tasks with competing timeframes and priorities. 
  • Organise workflow to accomplish established objectives.
