The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) is seeking a System Engineer (Networks) to join the ICT Infrastructure Unit. The ICT Infrastructure Unit is responsible for design, acquisition, build and operation of all ICT infrastructure in operation at QCAA. This includes the QCAA WAN/LAN voice and data networks, both on-premises and cloud-based compute and storage, server operations, database management and desktop support environments.

In the System Engineer (Networks) role, you will:

  • Demonstrate experience in data networking design and operation, development of performance monitoring regimes, and problem solving and trouble-shooting expertise in a mixed technology environment, including on-premise and cloud based solutions, to ensure the voice and data networks effectively support and enhance the QCAA business operations.
  • Administer, manage and document the LAN, VOIP, WLAN, WAN and internet infrastructure, firewalls, Cloud services and associated network monitoring and information security capabilities to maximise availability, performance, capacity and security of the network.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the QCAA Cyber security defence suite in accordance with industry best practice such as the Australian Cyber Security Centre Essential Eight program, and ISO27001. These solutions include content delivery networks, distributed denial of service (DDoS) mitigations, firewalls, content filters, intrusion detection and vulnerability management suites, email security solutions and associated protections for QCAA computing devices.
  • Participate in research and development to remain up to date on new systems, programs and platforms and enable continuous innovation within the network including access and control, monitoring and analysis, performance tuning, troubleshooting and documentation to maintain network performance to meet user demands.
  • Demonstrate knowldge and experience with Juniper and/or Cisco data communication technologies including switching and routing; VLANs, QoS, Firewall / Security devices.  Experience with fibre optics, structured cabling systems and with F5 BigIP load balancing, LTM, iRules. Policies and other F5 features also desirable.
  • Collaborate and build strong relationships within the ICT Infrastructure team, and key internal and external stakeholders, to ensure that ICT services are progressive, relevant and solutions driven.

The ideal candidate for this role:

  • Actively participates in change engagement activities and openly supports the intended outcomes. Careful management of change is essential in this role where the infrastructure supported is fundamental to every QCAA business process and the cost and impact of service disruption is extreme (leads change in complex environments)
  • Evaluates possible solutions and takes appropriate steps to mitigate risks. In such a complex environment there are often multiple potential solutions to issues or to meet new requirements.  Careful, detailed evaluation is key. (demonstrates sound governance)
  • Demonstrates careful planning and organisation to achieve results. Moreso than many areas detailed, tested and well communicated plans are essential to success. (drives accountability and outcomes)
