About the role:
The Senior Environmental Health Scientist will work within the Health Protection and Regulation Branch. The Health Protection and Regulation Branch within the Public Health Pillar is responsible for safeguarding the community from potential harm or illness caused by hazards and harmful practices, and enhancing the protective elements of water quality, fluoridation, food safety, radiation safety, medicines and poisons safety, healthcare legislation and chemical safety.
The current work scope of the Water Unit, includes health related aspects of drinking water, recycled water and recreational waters (including swimming pools and spas), managing the water fluoridation program and ongoing risk assessment and incident response for all microbial and chemical hazards in water. As a Senior Environmental Health Scientist, you will initiate, develop and review clinical policies and procedures that support consistent state-wide operational practices, service improvement activities and outcomes for significant water quality hazards. You will also provide high level clinical advice on significant water related issues to line managers, senior management and stakeholders both within and outside the discipline.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Use the principles of human health risk assessment to evaluate and predict health effects from exposure to microbial and chemical contaminants in water from anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic sources.
- Use high level scientific evidence, specialist expertise and independent judgement to develop strategies to prevent and/or control human exposure to water-related hazards.
- Apply the results of scientific research and environmental health risk assessments to inform population health interventions and health service delivery. This includes, but is not limited to, interventions such as policy, legislation, regulation, guidelines, health risk management and assessment.
- Regularly provide scientific and health risk advice on water quality matters to management, partners and other stakeholders, particularly those without a science background.
- Apply communication and scientific skills to convey complex scientific information in an understandable manner to public health practitioners, policy makers, other clinicians and the public.
