About Legal Aid Queensland

Legal Aid Queensland's vision is to be a leader in a fair justice system where people are able to understand and protect their legal rights. Our purpose is to provide quality, cost effective legal services to financially disadvantaged people throughout Queensland.

We embrace diversity, flexibility, learning and continuous improvement to deliver quality legal services. The work is challenging but rewarding - and that is why staff wellbeing and work/life balance are a top priority for us.

Legal Aid Queensland is committed to building and maintaining a strong First Nations workforce and building our cultural capability. This is a targeted vacancy under section 105 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are strongly encouraged to apply and may be prioritised in this process. Please note that this position is open to everyone and works with all clients and staff, not predominately or exclusively with First Nations clients and staff.

Legal Aid Queensland acknowledges and respects the Traditional Custodians of the land where our offices stand, and where we work to help disadvantaged Queenslanders uphold their legal rights in our justice system.

About the role

As an Emerging Lawyer in our Criminal Law Practice, you will provide exceptional legal services to clients in accordance with relevant legislation, policies, and practice standards. You will conduct casework, such as taking instructions, researching and preparing legal documents, and representing clients in courts and tribunals. Engaging with a diverse range of clients, including vulnerable individuals, you will apply trauma-informed practices to provide sensitive and effective legal assistance. You'll liaise with Legal Aid Queensland stakeholders, government agencies, and community organisations to support clients, all while contributing to law reforms and innovative legal service delivery initiatives. Under expert supervision, you'll have the opportunity to grow your skills, gain valuable courtroom experience, and make a significant difference in the lives of those who rely on our services.

About you

  • A love for the law and a passion for justice – especially in matters of criminal law.
  • Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland, with an active practising certificate.
  • A strong commitment to social justice and the ability to engage meaningfully with clients from complex backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of legal jurisdictions, ethical standards, and a willingness to adopt a proactive approach to self-improvement and learning.
  • A commitment to inclusion, diversity, and the vision of a child-safe organisation.
