About us:
Food Services is a large, high-volume and supportive team environment, delivering approximately 500–550 meals per service. The team includes 6 chefs and 8–9 kitchen assistants per shift across a 7-day roster, working collaboratively to ensure consistent, high-quality service. The kitchen currently operates a fresh, bulk-cooked plating line service and is transitioning to a contemporary on-demand model. As one of the largest kitchens in Cairns, the unit offers a well-structured workplace with clearly defined roles and a strong team culture focused on quality, efficiency, and patient care.

About your opportunity:
Be part of a frontline team delivering safe, nutritious, and patient-centred food services in a busy hospital environment. In this role, you will support all aspects of meal service, including preparation, plating, delivery, and collection, ensuring meals meet individual dietary, cultural, and clinical requirements.
Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will interpret diet instructions, assist with Meals on Demand service, and contribute to hydration and mid-meal programs. You will also maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workspace while supporting daily kitchen operations and equipment use.
This is a hands-on role where your teamwork, attention to detail, and commitment to food safety and patient care will help deliver a positive patient experience.
In your new role you will......
- Support all aspects of patient food services, including meal preparation, sandwich and cold food production, plating, assembly, meal ordering support, meal distribution and collection, hydration and mid-meal services, texture-modified meals, and special dietary requirements to ensure safe, nutritious, and patient-centred care.
- Clean and maintain a safe and hygienic workplace in accordance with the Cairns Hospital Food Safety Program, infection control requirements, hospital policies, and approved cleaning procedures.
- Safely operate equipment within the Food Services area in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures to ensure equipment remains in good working order.
- Work flexibly across a range of Food Services operational areas within Cairns Hospital and associated services as required, including inpatient wards, production and plating areas, dishwashing services, staff café operations, Mental Health Units, the Sub Acute Care Unit (SACU), and other areas managed under Food Services to meet operational requirements and service delivery needs.
