Your new role:

This is a rewarding opportunity to provide culturally responsive mental health support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment. You will:

  • Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to access, engage with and navigate mental health services, ensuring care is culturally safe and responsive.
  • Work collaboratively with the Integrated Mental Health and Substance Use Services (IMSS) multidisciplinary team to assist with assessment, care planning, referrals and ongoing support.
  • Deliver health promotion, education and community engagement activities that strengthen mental health awareness and access to care.
  • Advocate for clients and provide outreach support in community settings, homes and healthcare facilities to improve wellbeing.

This is an identified vacancy with a genuine occupational requirement that candidates are persons who have a lived/living experience of mental health challenges, substance use challenges, service use and recovery. About you:

We are seeking a culturally knowledgeable and compassionate professional who is passionate about improving mental health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You have:

  • Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, family structures, protocols and the social determinants of health.
  • Ability to provide culturally capable mental health support while building trusted relationships with clients, families and community stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Commitment to advocacy, cultural leadership, continuous learning and delivering high-quality, person-centred care.

Integrated Mental Health and Substance Use Services

The Integrated Mental Health and Substance Use Services (IMSS), CoE; aims to provide a culturally appropriate service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, supporting and enhancing patient centred care. The aim of the service includes reduction in hospital admission rates; reduction of mental health distress and increased support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to navigate community resources to address social determinants of health. The service model incorporates outreach either in the client's home or elsewhere as identified by the client.
