In the role of Principal Materials Officer you will project manage research and investigation projects as part of the ongoing development of materials testing and investigation practices and as part of the unit's governance role through the development and delivery of training. As a project leader you will deliver specialist laboratory, field and surveillance services associated with transport infrastructure within a significant and diverse materials environment.

Some of your responsibilities will include:
• Project manage the delivery of materials testing and investigation services related to the delivery of transport infrastructure projects.
• Perform specialist and complex tests, conduct specialist investigations, calibration, instrumentation, surveillance, and audit activities as appropriate for transport infrastructure projects.
• Provide specialist technical advice and minor consultancy to departmental staff, other government agencies, Industry, and consultants on:
 o Procedural aspects of complex tests and give interpretation for specialist test results.
 o Methodologies used for specialist investigations, audit, and instrumentation activities.
 o Interpretation and application of specifications and technical notes; and
 o Capital equipment purchases and significant maintenance.
• Manage, supervise, and coordinate unit and/or project staff including contractors using contemporary human resource and OHS&E principles and practices in a dynamic and often high-risk environment.
• Undertake client and stakeholder liaison/consultation to ensure expectations and needs are managed, and projects are being delivered, performance is reviewed and issues addressed as required.
• Develop technical systems and support documentation; draft testing methodologies, administrative procedures, staff instructions and WHS&E instruction, as well as facilitate the implementation of systems and standards.
• Act as a senior NATA signatory for specialist tests and sampling as well as:
• Draft technical reports for specialist investigations, audits, and instrumentation projects, summarising findings and providing options; and
• Report OHS&E risks and issues to management.
• Lead training and technology transfer initiatives including development programs by providing structured training programs and project linked & on-the-job coaching to TMR and industry engineering personnel, as well as oversee the development and maintenance of competency levels for Materials Services staff.

To succeed in this role, you will possess:
• A Diploma of Laboratory Technology or acceptable equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution or registered training organisation is mandatory.
• Current holder of a Class C driver licence.
• Must be eligible to work in Australia
• Due to this role having access to sensitive data, a criminal history check will be undertaken prior to appointment to the role.
• Pre-employment check of serious discipline history for the recommended candidate(s) as a condition of employment.
