As our Principal Scientist you will provide senior leadership within the science team to ensure quality science is delivered to reduce the impact and risks associated with invasive plants in Queensland. You will work closely with a broad range of stakeholders to contribute to the strategic direction of the Invasive Plants and Animals Science group ensuring research priorities for managing weeds and pest animals in Queensland are met. You will use your technical expertise to provide weed management advice for a range of weeds impacting Queensland. You will manage a personal research program as well as a research team including project review, budgets, staff and provide advice to senior management.
Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) plays a leadership role in the biosecurity system in collaboration with its stakeholders. BQ leads the Queensland Government's efforts to protect our way of life, environment, biodiversity, human and animal health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats. Through supporting the collective efforts of our stakeholders and all Queenslanders, BQ will continue to protect our state and Australia from emerging plant and animal pests and diseases and effectively manage existing ones.
Invasive Plants and Animals (IPA) significantly affect the environment, agricultural production, infrastructure, human health and our way of life in general. The IPA program directs, facilitates and delivers strategic and targeted action to reduce the impact of invasive species in Queensland.
As a Principal Scientist you will:
• Provide strong science leadership within the Invasive Plants and Animals Program including representing the invasive plants and animal program at relevant meeting, on working groups and at stakeholder events.
• Build relationships and trust with stakeholders and collaborative research partners to ensure the science program improves invasive plant and animal management outcomes and helps reduce their impact.
• Develop a safe supportive team culture which drives high quality research outcome and develops team capability.
There are some mandatory requirements for this role. You must have:
• An Australian Bachelor degree (AQF level 7 or equivalent) or higher in Science / Applied Science / Environmental Science from a recognised tertiary institution from a recognised tertiary institution.
• A current “C” class drivers' licence.
• Must be physically capable of conducting field work and working in remote areas that are often hot and humid and driving for extended periods of time.
You will have a keen eye for detail, great time management and effective problem-skilling skills. More than anything, you will have a positive attitude and make a great contribution to our close-knit and connected team.
