About the role:
The Pathology Assistant CSR will work at Logan Hospital's Pathology Queensland Laboratory. The Pathology Queensland laboratory at Logan Hospital offers a 24 hour, 7 day a week comprehensive diagnostic pathology service to support the clinical staff and patients of the Logan and Beaudesert Hospitals, delivered by a dedicated team of Clinical Assistants, Administration Officers and Health Practitioners. Services provided on-site include Phlebotomy, Specimen Reception, Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Transfusion Medicine, Urine Microscopy and rapid PCR. Testing not performed on-site is referred to the Princess Alexandra and the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Laboratories.
The purpose of the role is to work as part of a dynamic team which provides an effective and efficient Central Specimen Reception (CSR) service 24/7, performing day, evening or overnight shifts as required. The client-focussed CSR service includes receiving all types of pathology specimens, performing pre-analytical specimen processing and referral, supporting laboratory operations including pathology stores and maintaining a safe and clean laboratory. This role will provide a relieving function to the team roster template, backfilling any staff leave across any shift.
Your key responsibilities include:
- General laboratory duties including but not limited to: receipt and storage of specimens; registration of requests into the laboratory information system; timely and accurate preparation of specimens for local testing; packaging and transport of specimens to referral laboratories; receipt, storage and distribution of pathology consumables; other laboratory duties as requested by the CSR Supervisor, Laboratory Manager or their delegates
- Effectively prioritise workloads to assist the laboratory to meet Pathology Queensland Turn Around Time targets
- Responding to queries from clients regarding tests, turn-around-times, specimen types, sample volume requirements and more
- Maintenance of a safe working environment by the cleaning of work benches, equipment and sinks within the laboratory
- Comply with documented processes for clinical assistant staff working in the specimen reception and other areas of the laboratory in accordance with the ISO 15189 standard
Role fit:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate full availability to work across all shifts within a 24/7 CSR roster in a relieving capacity, supported by a strong record of positive teamwork, respectful conduct, and consistently high attendance and punctuality. They will show the ability to follow controlled documentation, work accurately and conscientiously with minimal supervision, and apply well‑developed written and verbal communication skills when engaging with clients, colleagues, vendors, and service providers. A solid working knowledge of, or the proven ability to rapidly learn, pre‑analytical specimen processing and inventory control is essential, along with competent computer and data‑entry skills, familiarity with Microsoft Office, and the capacity to use or quickly learn systems such as a Laboratory Information System like Auslab and an integrated electronic medical record platform.
