About us:
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is a vital part of Queensland's justice system, representing the State in prosecuting criminal matters across courts such as the High Court of Australia, Supreme Court, District Court, and more. Our work addresses complex and sesensitive legal matters, ensuring justice is upheld with professionalism and integrity.
This is a permanent flexible-full time position from date of commencement in Butler Chambers (Brisbane).
As a Legal Support Supervisor, your key responsibilities will include:
- Establishing and maintaining high standards of legal administrative support by implementing robust procedures and ensuring oversight of output quality.
- Assisting the Practice Manager in compiling performance reports and monitoring progress against key performance indicators.
- Coordinating administrative support for legal practitioners by allocating tasks to Legal Support Officers and ensuring the timely preparation of criminal prosecutions.
- Supervising and leading Legal Support Officers, including managing attendance, performance, development, and leave planning.
- Maintaining accurate records and files for criminal prosecutions, including briefs of evidence, witness lists, exhibits, and evidence documentation.
- Using video editing software to edit and redact digital exhibits (e.g. interviews, video statements, CCTV footage) for court presentations.
- Supporting legal practitioners during witness and victim of crime conferences by preparing accurate file notes and statements.
- Appearing in court as an instructing clerk or listings officer to provide information on prosecution matters.
- Preparing detailed, on-the-spot sitting reports that accurately document court proceedings.
What we're looking for:
We're seeking a dynamic and skilled professional who can demonstrate:
- A strong understanding of legal practice, including the prosecution's role in the justice process, the courts' function, and the independence of the prosecuting authority.
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills, with attention to detail in preparing legal advice, court documents, and other materials.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced legal environment.
- The ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders, maintain confidentiality, and engage with victims of crime in a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive manner.
- Early leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and support a team to deliver high-quality legal administrative services.
- Analytical skills to interpret complex legal and legislative requirements and conduct legal research.
- A strong work ethic and a collaborative approach to working within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in using computerised systems, including electronic document management systems, the Microsoft Office suite, and the ability to learn new tools such as the ODPP Themis Digital Case Management Solution and video/audio editing software.
- A commitment to professionalism, ethical standards, diversity, and inclusion, with cultural capabilities to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
Mandatory qualifications:
There are no mandatory qualifications required for this role, however, possession of relevant tertiary qualifications in justice, criminology, law or a related discipline will behighly regarded.
