We are seeking a proactive and practical Unit Support Officer to play a key role in supporting the delivery of outdoor and environmental education programs. This rewarding position combines facilities and grounds maintenance, equipment management, administration and direct support for educational activities, helping to create safe, engaging, and memorable learning experiences for students. You will play an important role in helping students connect with the outdoors while working in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same.

About our Centre:

Nestled within the lush tropical rainforest of the Paluma Range National Park, approximately 80km north of Townsville, Paluma Environmental Education Centre offers students immersive learning experiences in the heart of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Catering for up to 70 guests, the Centre provides curriculum-aligned environmental education programs, outdoor learning opportunities, and adventure experiences, including canoeing and challenge activities. Supported by a dedicated team of teachers and staff, students engage in hands-on learning while exploring one of Australia's most unique and diverse ecosystems.

About the Role:

  • Contribute to the education of students by creating and developing appropriate facilities and physical resources for use in outdoor and environmental education programs.
  • Maintain centre facilities and physical resources to enable programs to be conducted in a safe, serviceable and hygienic environment.
  • Subsidised staff housing may be available to the successful applicant subject to eligibility requirements.
  • Possession of, or willingness to obtain, licences relevant to the role, which may include a current C Class Driver Licence, First Aid Certificate, Marine Licence, Marine Radio Licence, or Commercial Coxswain Certificate.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining centre grounds, buildings, equipment, and facilities to ensure a safe, clean, and functional environment.
  • Undertaking routine and emergency maintenance of camping, recreational, scientific, audiovisual, and operational equipment.
  • Supporting outdoor and environmental education programs through practical demonstrations and assistance under the supervision of teaching staff.
  • Assisting with camps and outdoor activities, including the setup, maintenance, and storage of equipment and resources.
  • Maintaining trails, gardens, plant nurseries, and natural learning environments.
  • Managing waste, recycling, firewood supplies, and general site upkeep.
  • Providing administrative support, including answering phones, preparing certificates, photocopying, and resource preparation.
  • Assisting with purchasing recommendations and resource management.
