Our Public Health Unit provides strategic, professional, and operational nursing leadership for the CPHU nursing staff. This position provides leadership and direction on communicable diseases management and coordinate strategic and operational responses to major outbreaks, emergent disease threats and other serious disease and infection trends.

The Health Service is the primary provider of health services to residents of the Cairns, Tablelands and Cassowary Coast regions with a population of over 250,000 people, as well as providing specialist services to the Torres Strait and Cape York region. Cairns Hospital is the primary referral hospital for Far North Queensland.

The CPHU team consists of a director, public health physicians, public health nurses, environmental health officers, epidemiologists, data managers, project officers, medical entomologists and administration officers.  CPHU works collaboratively with, and supports, a range of organisations including other health services, other government departments, local government, non-government agencies, research institutions and local communities.

About your role:

  • Act as an expert professional resource resolving complex, clinical, governance, operational and ethical challenges.
  • Promote and support a culture of continuous quality improvement in line with nursing/midwifery professional strategic direction and National Safety and Quality Health Care standards.
  • Monitor communicable disease programs and objectives based on the analysis of data and ensure findings are reported through appropriate channels to contribute to the improvement and promotion of public health service planning and outcomes.
  • Lead and manage research and development initiatives which enhance service planning and outcomes in relation to the prevention and control of communicable diseases and conditions.
  • Apply advanced and broad knowledge of contemporary public health nursing practice for the prevention and control of communicable and infectious diseases and conditions.
  • Lead improvement initiatives, including managing change, building capacity, improving performance, and enhancing the quality of the working environment.

For this role you will have:

  • Expertise in the coordination of human, material and financial resources utilising contemporary management principles for the delivery of quality cost effective public health programs.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leadership, management, guidance and support of healthcare staff within an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Proven ability to provide expert evidence based clinical leadership and co-ordination for public health programs within a multidisciplinary team across the Health Service
  • Demonstrated ability in the application of highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including working effectively at a high level with individuals, groups and as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team. management of conflict resolution and negotiation which will support the development of effective partnerships with key stakeholders
