Your Opportunity

As the Pastoral Care Coordinator, you will coordinate the pastoral care for all students associated with the Pacific Maritime Training Services program. You will also implement an inclusive and culturally sensitive environment that effectively supports students’ success in the Pacific Maritime Training Services program.

This position reports to the Contract Manager  - Pacific Maritime Training Services (PMTS)

This is a Temporary, Full-Time opportunity, to September 2027 unless otherwise determined.

The position will be based primarily at Cairns however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and management expertise to foster innovation and ensure that the delivery of Pastoral Care services associated with the Pacific Maritime Training Services program are of a high standard, meeting Commonwealth contractual standards and expectations.
  • Lead the Pastoral Care Services team to provide a positive education experience for all Pacific Maritime Training Services students and support them in achieving success in their studies.
  • Implement a holistic approach to Pastoral Care Services, being guided by principles of ethical practice, inclusion, mutual respect and cultural sensitivity in all interactions with Pacific Maritime Training Services students and stakeholders from the Commonwealth and the Pacific Island Countries 
  • Provide services that are cohesive, integrated and interrelated ensuring each student’s wellbeing is paramount 
  • Manage all travel arrangements for Pacific Island Country’s trainees attending Pacific Maritime Training Services courses, and maintain responsibility for the care of trainees for the full period of training courses (from departure from their country through until arrival back in their country) 
  • Maintain a schedule of known Pastoral Care support activities, projecting work effort for a period of not less than one year in advance 
  • Coordinate access to medical and dental services as required, and arrange access to welfare and educational counselling whilst undertaking Pacific Maritime Training Services courses as needed 
  • Coordinate performance development within the Pastoral Care Support Services team and identify current and future training needs. 
  • Provide information updates to all Pastoral Care Services staff on compliance and contractual issues, relevant to the Pacific Maritime Training Services program. 
  • Coordinate the transport of students while undertaking Pacific Maritime Training Services training in Australia and contribute to the afterhours support of students (on-call roster). 
  • Actively engage with industry, business and the community 
  • Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Showing Initiative, Working Together, Focusing on our Customer and Taking Responsibility.

How you will be assessed

The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

  1. Demonstrates ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in the coordination of pastoral care support to students from different cultural backgrounds.
  2. Demonstrates ability to work as an effective team member and lead staff to achieve predetermined outcomes within timeframes.
  3. Demonstrates ability to effectively analyse a situation and provide an appropriate and culturally sensitive response to ensure necessary actions are taken in a timely manner.
  4. Demonstrates well developed written and oral communication skills including the ability to problem solve and negotiate with staff, students and service providers.
  5. Display flexibility and responsiveness and have the initiative, attitude and ability to thrive within a dynamic, challenging and changing environment.

Mandatory requirements: 

  • Proven leadership experience 
  • Communication and Stakeholder engagement 
  • Conflict resolution and Behaviour management

Highly Desirable Requirements

  • Case management or Welfare background
  • HR license
