In this role you will design, co-ordinate, implement and evaluate vocational training programs and related activities to meet the needs of the offender population within the facility. This position will contribute to the proposed objectives and outcomes of the Queensland Government’s Delivering for Queensland plan, National Agreement on Closing the Gap, Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, Better Justice Together: Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Strategy 2024-2031, as well as the organisation’s own 2030 Strategic Plan. There will be cultural support available for the incumbent through Murridhagun Cultural Centre.

The primary accountabilities of the Vocational Education Training Officer - Identified include:

  • Assess participants vocational training needs and provides advice regarding vocational training and employment opportunities both within custody and in the community and provide any cultural considerations that may assist in a First Nation's participant's learning journey. Assisting with engagement strategies for engagement of First Nations' participants.
  • Utilise flexible, blended and distributed learning techniques, strategies, options and products to meet the various learning needs of the participants such as participants with learning limitations, are neurodiverse or from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Utilise culturally safe practices and communication skills to coordinate and deliver vocational programs aligned with nationally recognised training packages and accredited courses
  • Assess student performance against competency standards and recommend and/or provide additional training, where necessary, for students to gain competency, this may include risk mitigation.
  • Maintain records of course participation including storage (physical and electronic), retrieval and archiving.  
  • Maintain data pertaining to the attendance and completion rates for participants. 
  • Administer a quality control system for maintaining feedback with management, providers and participants.  
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of student participation in vocational programs on the Integrated Offender Management System (IOMS).
  • Contribute to research and planning/programming, development, implementation and review of subjects/courses.  
  • Participate in development programs to develop and maintain currency of personal and professional skills, knowledge and attitudes.
  • Maintain currency with industry practices, workplace delivery and contemporary teaching methodologies in relevant field/s.
  • Provide current information on vocational education and training programs being offered and how these may be advertised at the centres to attract participant interest.
  • Report on service delivery outcomes to key stakeholders including education outcomes surrounding First Nations participants.
  • Build strong stakeholder relations with contracted RTOs for the delivery of vocational education and training courses.
  • Liaise with First Nations communities and collaborate with industry, business, and community stakeholders using culturally safe practices to identify training and employment opportunities that support prisoner reintegration and the development of sustainable employment pathways. 
  • Coordinates activities in collaboration with the Education, Industries and Specialist Operations.  
  • Link in with internal stakeholders including trade instructors to ensure training supports operational demands.  
  • Comply with all policies, procedures and instructions given for workplace health and safety at the workplace by the Agency and ensure your workplace area is safe and without risk to health.  
  • Ensure other employees, contractors and visitors are not exposed to risks to their health and safety arising out of your conduct.  
  • Undertake any other training related duties as assigned by the Senior Service Coordinator.
