About the role
This is an outstanding opportunity for a legal professional to take on a position at Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) and lead high-quality family law services to vulnerable and disadvantaged Queenslanders. The work undertaken by this role is challenging, complex and rewarding.
You will represent the interests of legally aided clients in family law, domestic and family violence, counselling notes protect, child protection and related matters, while supervising the legal work of, identify training needs, training and guiding staff within the team. A principal lawyer at LAQ provides strategic representation including early intervention and alternate dispute resolution. This role is also responsible for liaising and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to improve service delivery for clients and contributes to policy developments and law reform issues.
In this role you will:
- Manage and supervise a team of professional and administrative staff including achievement development plans (ADP), coaching, provision of performance management and feedback, recruitment, and other human resource activities.
- Supervise legal and administrative work, train, guide and develop the skills of staff within your team, LAQ staff statewide and external legal practitioners.
- Lead, monitor and report on the operational performance of the team and ensure compliance with all professional and corporate responsibilities.
- Lead, contribute to and implement changes in policies, procedures, systems and processes.
- Represent clients, including preparing matters, instructing counsel and personally appearing as an advocate in family law, domestic and family violence, counselling notes protect, child protection and other related matters.
- Develop, implement and improve systems and processes to manage the allocation of files, workflow and administration within the team.
- Develop and deliver continuing professional development to Legal Aid Queensland staff and preferred suppliers and contribute to community legal education of external stakeholders.
- Conduct quality audits and file reviews of legal practitioners in accordance with the risk-based file review strategy and investigate client complaints.
- Contribute to submissions and assist the Family Law Services Directorate to lead Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy, procedure, law reform and legal service delivery initiatives.
