The role of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program Facilitator is to provide culturally specific programs and services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, including the development of programs and services that meet individual client needs and to facilitate communication between Youth Detention Centres and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

As the ATSI Program Facilitator, you will specifically:

• Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Consult with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in relation to the development and maintenance of services, activities and programs for young people subject to juvenile justice orders, particularly Indigenous youths in detention, that facilitates their rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.
• Facilitate communication between departmental service delivery and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to ensure programs and services provided to Indigenous young people are culturally appropriate.
• Deliver and assist in the provision of programs, activities and services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in detention.
• Participate productively and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in delivering programs and services to clients.
• Assist young people with pre-release programs and provide links with Indigenous communities and relevant community organisations to facilitate continuity of educational, vocational and Indigenous programs.
• Assist with the security and safety of the Centre by observance of operational procedures and standards as they impact on program delivery and the provision of other activities organised for young people.
• Provide high quality written reports, briefs and correspondence as required, using manual and computerised systems.

Role specific/technical skills

You understand the impacts of historical and contemporary policy and practices upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You have a demonstrated ability to engage and communicate effectively, and with humility, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

• You build and sustain effective working relationships with clients and stakeholders using your well-developed communication and facilitation skills to ensure a high standard of service delivery.
• You have knowledge of and an ability to apply theoretical perspectives relating to youth justice and restorative practice processes, including working with victims, young people, families and community stakeholders.
• You hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110, inclusive of the Language Literacy and Numeracy unit of competency) whilst not mandatory is highly desirable.
• You have significant experience in the research and development of programs and services tailored to meet current and emerging needs of youth from diverse backgrounds and learning styles/needs.
