This position is responsible for assisting the Kitchen Supervisor and supervising the kitchen team with the smooth operations of the various kitchen services by performing cooking and food preparation duties.

A cook may prepare and present hot and cold dishes for the young people in our care, staff and provide foods for reintegration activities. They may also prepare and present morning and afternoon teas and functions. This position is required to contribute to the provision of high quality food products and services as part of the kitchen team.

This position will be rewarding as you are contributing to the delivery of services to support some of the most vulnerable youths in our community.

Key responsibilities

As Cook, you will specifically:

• Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Prepare and provide nutritious and varied meals to clients and staff.
• Contribute to an environment that reflects normalised living and working situations for young people.
• Adherence to the security and safety by observance of operational procedures and standards as they impact on kitchen processes and procedure.
• Maintain a hygienic, safe and secure working environment, including cleanliness of work areas and kitchen equipment.
• Prepare requisition orders and assist in the purchase of kitchen and food related stores and provisions and maintain an effective system of stock control, eg recording and stocktakes.
• Supervise kitchenhands and participate in the day-to-day operations of the kitchen.
• Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the equipment used within a small commercial kitchen environment.

Role specific/technical skills

You will have

• Cookery experience in a commercial kitchen.
• Knowledge of safe food handling principles.
• Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations).

• Successful applicants will be subject to either criminal history check or Blue Card screening.

• Newly appointed public sector employees are obliged, within one month of starting duty, to make a disclosure of any employment as a lobbyist in the previous two years.
