Chief Government Geologist

As Chief Government Geologist and Custodian of the state’s geoscience and exploration data, you will ensure Queensland remains at the forefront of new mining and resource development and capitalises on the opportunity this provides for economic development. Your authoritative geoscience advice will provide industry, government and the community with support that guides informed decisions on Queensland exploration opportunity and resource assessment potential.
The roles continued focus on championing new analytical techniques and AI modelling to maximise the value of the state's geological data, and program of rigorous data collection, will help drive investment confidence.

In this role you will:
- Provide high quality data and strategic advice on Queensland's geology, resources and resource potential to the Minister, Director-General and Departmental executives helping shape the state's approach to resource development and land use planning.
- Provide advice connecting resource quality to economic potential informing government on infrastructure constraints, international cost curve analysis, and the impacts of mine interruptions or closures on regional communities.
- Provide strategic leadership to deliver on the department's vision for growing the resources sector, driving the discovery of new minerals and energy resources and advancing initiatives to develop and strengthen mining provinces including the North West Minerals Province.
- Oversee Queensland's geoscientific data programs, managing the collection, management and promotion of geological information, and integrate emerging analytical and AI technologies, to maximises ongoing exploration in the resources sector.
- Enhance international market investment confidence, positioning Queensland as a trusted partner promoting strong ESG principles, responsible supply mechanisms, mineral traceability, and ensuring Queensland's resources can respond to emerging international accreditation requirements.
- Represent the Queensland Government and the Minister, Director-General and Deputy Director-General at high level forums, events and conferences.
- Build collaborative research opportunities with international, Australian and other State governments, the exploration industry, CSIRO and academic organisations.
- Lead a financially sustainable, high performance, workforce.
- Positively contribute to the Agency's executive leadership community.
What we are looking for:
- Dynamic and proactive leader with the ability to engage others to deliver outcomes.
- A highly respected technical expert with a deep understanding of the resource industry, including minerals, petroleum and coal sectors.
- Proven effectiveness as an executive team member with political astuteness and ability to network, negotiate and navigate complex environments.
- Strong industry and stakeholder engagement, with focus on enabling cross jurisdiction collaboration and intelligence sharing.
