The program supports career changers to complete an eligible postgraduate Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program while developing their teaching skills through a paid internship in a Queensland state school. Program benefits
If you are successful, you will receive a $20,000 pre-tax scholarship, paid in four instalments throughout your first year of full-time ITE studies. In your second year, you'll undertake a paid internship in a Queensland state school, where you'll work part-time (25 hours a fortnight) while studying part-time and receive a full-time intern teacher salary. The internship also includes support from a supervising and a mentor teacher, as well as access to a Community of Practice

Eligibility for the Career Change Internship Program
To be eligible for the program you must:

- have an undergraduate degree in a field other than education/teaching (minimum 3-year bachelor's degree)
- have not previously commenced or completed an ITE program, unless you meet one of the previous studies in education/teaching criteria (see criteria below)
- have Australian citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia
- meet the admission requirements for one of the eligible postgraduate ITE programs offered by our university partners and be accepted for enrolment (see list of eligible ITE programs below)
- be able to complete an eligible postgraduate ITE program offered by one of our partner universities on a full-time basis in the first year of the program (2027), in accordance with a predetermined program map designed to align with the CCIP
- have the flexibility to complete a one-year internship in an eligible Queensland state school during the second year of the program while completing part-time studies (2028)

In addition, applicants will be asked to confirm their willingness to:

- complete an internship placement at a state school located in a priority region of Queensland: Central Queensland, Darling Downs South West (excluding Toowoomba City and Warwick), Far North Queensland and North Queensland
- commit to a permanent teaching position upon program completion for a minimum of 2-3 years (based on location) in one of the department's priority regions

Individuals who are able and committed to teach in a high demand subject area will be prioritised when the number of applications exceeds the number of places. Current high demand curriculum areas include secondary English, mathematics, science (excluding psychology), agricultural science, technologies (including industrial design and technologies, digital technologies, engineering and hospitality) and special education/inclusion. The department has the discretion to determine if other subject areas (including Primary) are considered. Preference will also be given to candidates with relevant industry experience aligned to the curriculum area they are seeking to teach

Previous studies in education/teaching criteria
Individuals who have previously commenced but not completed an ITE program may apply for this program if they:

- are not eligible for recognition of prior learning from previous ITE studies (typically studies undertaken 10 or more years ago); or
- have completed no more than two units of an eligible ITE program with a partner university at the time of application and by the commencement of Semester/Trimester 1, 2027. Applicants must be eligible to continue or re-enrol and provide a current academic transcript

- Australian Catholic University: Master of Teaching (Secondary)*
- Australian College of Christian Studies: Master of Teaching (Primary) or Master of Teaching (Secondary)
- Griffith University: Master of Primary Teaching or Master of Secondary Teaching
- Queensland University of Technology: Master of Teaching (Primary) or Master of Teaching (Secondary)
- University of Southern Queensland: Master of Learning and Teaching (Primary) or Master of Learning and Teaching (Secondary)
- University of the Sunshine Coast: Master of Teaching (Secondary)

* Students at ACU have the option to choose two electives that focus on teaching students with disability and complex needs.

Program Offers
Successful applicants will receive a formal Contract of Employment once all required program and university enrolment requirements have been met. Contracts are expected to be offered in December 2026. Permanent employment will be offered on successful completion of the ITE degree and the CCIP, gaining provisional registration with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), and satisfaction of all departmental employment requirements
