Exciting opportunity as a Legal Officer to make a significant impact and influence law reform in the Department of Justice. Strategic Policy and Legislation has wide reaching responsibilities that support the operation of Queensland’s justice system and leads the development and coordination of the implementation of proposals for primary and subordinate legislation within the Justice portfolio.
As the Legal Officer you will assist in developing and implementing legislative and policy projects in relation to a wide range of matters within the Justice portfolio. You will enjoy a flexible working environment with excellent employment conditions which may include telecommuting for part of the working week.

About the role
Strategic Policy and Legislation (SPL) has wide reaching responsibilities that support the operation of Queensland's justice system. SPL has teams that focus on specific aspects of policy and legislation, as well as a specialist project team. The Criminal Law teams focus on law and policy with respect to criminal law and criminal justice reform, including the Criminal Code, sentencing laws, criminal procedure and jurisdiction, organised crime, drugs misuse and many other aspects of criminal justice policy. The Civil Law teams focus on civil, public and administrative law issues including courts legislation, domestic and family violence and child protection, guardianship and administration; privacy and right to information, civil liability and property, trust and succession law. The successful applicant will be placed in a policy and legislation team having regard to SPL's business needs.
As the Legal Officer you will provide advice on justice policy issues and develop options, policies, strategies and initiatives, including the development of legislation. You will develop and implement less complex legislative and policy projects and research and analyse justice policy issues.
What you will bring
To thrive in this role, you will need:
• Capacity to develop an understanding of the key issues and emerging trends in the justice system, and their implications for the department and government;
• Capacity to develop an ability to formulate policy and legislative proposals, particularly in relation to justice matters;
• Demonstrated ability or capacity to work effectively as a team member and support other team members and engage with stakeholders to build rapport;
• Structure messages clearly and succinctly, both orally and in writing, and seek to understand the audience to tailor your communication style and message accordingly;
• Demonstrate accountability for the execution and quality of results through professionalism, persistence, and transparency; and
• Behave in an ethical, respectful and culturally sensitive manner.
