Woorabinda State School is searching for a compassionate, responsive and collaborative Guidance Officer to join our school community.

Guidance Officers are committed to providing comprehensive, student-centred support that responds to the identified and changing needs of students. Working collaboratively with school-based personnel and external support providers, the Guidance Officer will provide professional and holistic support across a range of educational contexts, including schools and alternative education programs, while remaining accountable for the delivery of high-quality student support services.

About us:

Located in the town of Woorabinda in Central Queensland, it is situated 170 km south west of Rockhampton on the traditional lands of the Ghungalu Aboriginal people and is the only primary school in the community. The school's motto is 'Proud and Deadly', with our school values - We are deadly by being - kind, strong, respectful. The school has outstanding teachers from diverse backgrounds and employs many local staff as teacher-aides, cleaners, groundsmen, administration staff, tuckshop staff, wellbeing and an engagement team. These staff play a vital role in supporting teachers in the classroom and are provide the important link to the community ensuring our school runs effectively. The school has developed a number of partnerships with organisations such as Murrup, Central Queensland Indigenous Development, National Indigenous Australians Agency, Playmatters, the Queensland Police Service through the local Woorabinda Police, Yoonthulla and Queensland Health through the Deadly Ears program. Traditional owners, elders and community members are very important members of our school community and they support our school staff and students to collect and collate local history, family histories and language to be used in the curriculum.  The school continues to embed the two local traditional Aboriginal languages, Ghungalu and Wadja, into the curriculum. There is so much strength in the community of Woorabinda and the rich diversity amongst the students and staff adds value to this great learning environment.

Your opportunity:

• Provide professional expertise, leadership and support to school communities and networks in the development and implementation of plans, programs, and procedures to assist students in achieving positive educational, developmental and lifelong learning outcomes
• Collaboratively negotiate, develop and implement programs for students that have a focus on preventative and early intervention strategies; are responsive to identified personal, social, emotional and educational needs; and aim to foster resilience and personal skills development.

Responsibilities:

• Provide counselling, assessment, advocacy and individualised support to students and families.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents and external agencies to coordinate support and referrals.
• Identify and respond to educational, behavioural, mental health, social and career needs.
• Develop and implement individualised support plans, interventions and educational adjustments.
• Support student protection, critical incidents, transitions and reintegration.
• Provide professional advice, leadership and support to school staff and families.
• Maintain confidential records and uphold professional and legal requirements.
