The Paralegal will provide specialised administrative and paralegal support to the YJ Legal Services team under the direction of the General Counsel.

The Paralegal will be responsible for the management of subpoenas and statutory information requests, administration of the department’s government insurance arrangements, and the provision of high level legal administrative support. The position requires strong attention to detail and organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

As the Paralegal, you will specifically:

  • Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Manage administration of subpoenas, notices to produce, and statutory information requests.
  • Assess and triage incoming subpoenas to determine scope, risk, deadlines and required action.
  • Liaise with business units to identify, collect and coordinate relevant records within legislative timeframes.
  • Prepare draft objections to production, affidavits of search, and correspondence for review.
  • Maintain subpoena registers and tracking systems to ensure compliance with court-ordered deadlines.
  • Liaise with external legal providers, courts and registry staff regarding filing, service and procedural requirements.
  • Manage the departmental insurance administration - Queensland Government Insurance Fund portal administration.
  • Manage investigation and information gathering for legal officers when advising on breaches under the Information Privacy Act 2009.
  • Provide high-level administrative support to Legal Services, including document preparation, formatting, and file management.
  • Establish and maintain legal files in accordance with recordkeeping legislation and departmental policy.
  • Assist in the preparation of briefs to counsel and external solicitors.
  • Monitor shared inboxes and allocate matters appropriately.
  • Ensure all subpoena and insurance processes comply with relevant legislation.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of procedures, templates and workflow systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement when handling sensitive material.
  • Build effective working relationships with internal business areas to facilitate timely document retrieval.
  • Communicate professionally with courts, external solicitors and government agencies.
