Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland, offering laboratory services in the disciplines of: anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics.

About the role:

As a full-time Clinical Assistant your role is key to supporting the routine and critical functions of the laboratory. This involves; specimen reception, specimen processing for analysis and referral, consumables and stock control as well as assisting scientific staff to perform a range of diagnostic tests at the Bundaberg laboratory. You will also be required to perform phlebotomy (inpatient and outpatient) as this is a dual role. The role is required to participate in a shift roster 7 days a week including public holidays, this includes day and evening shift between 0600-2400hrs.

Pathology Queensland Bundaberg is a part of the Sunshine Coast Laboratory Group that also includes; Hervey Bay, Gympie and Nambour Hospitals. With oversight provided by the Sunshine Coast University Hospital Laboratory. There may be a requirement to work in these laboratories if the need arises.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Perform general laboratory duties including receipt of specimens, registration of specimens, setup of microbiology samples and referral of specimens to other laboratories.
  • Collection of appropriate quality blood and non-blood specimens, performing a phlebotomist role.
  • Adherence to Pathology Queensland patient identification, labelling, collection and processing policies at all times.
  • Maintenance of the laboratory environment including cleaning and restocking of consumables.
  • Comply with National Association of Testing Authority/International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation/certification requirements including performing quality control procedures, assisting with preparation of procedure manuals and completion of relevant statistics.
  • Comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations, and standards which impact upon the position including Queensland Health Code of Conduct, contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, such as workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination policy.

Role fit:

You will provide high-quality patient-centred pathology services, bringing experience, or the ability to quickly develop expertise, in specimen collection, phlebotomy and pre-analytical specimen processing. With a strong understanding of quality and safety principles, including standard precautions for handling patients and biological specimens, you will perform duties accurately and in accordance with established procedures and guidelines. Your attention to detail, ability to work independently following instruction, and commitment to continuous quality improvement will support the delivery of reliable laboratory services. As a collaborative team member with strong communication skills, you will build effective relationships with patients, clinical staff and colleagues while maintaining a positive focus on patient care and service excellence.
