As General Counsel, Executive Director, you will lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver practical, high-quality advice that supports government priorities, protects the interests of the organisation and the State and ensures compliance with regulatory, governance and legal obligations.

This role will be required to navigate complex and politically sensitive matters across areas including commercial, employment, property, native title, cultural heritage and human rights law.

The General Counsel, Executive Director, is a critical leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, expert legal counsel, governance oversight and enterprise risk leadership across the department.

A key component of the role will be the development and maintenance of strong and productive relationships across government, industry and external stakeholder groups. Success in the role requires an individual who can build trust, foster collaboration and influence outcomes through effective communication, negotiation and relationship management.

This role will be required to analyse complex issues, identify risks and opportunities, assess the broader strategic environment and provide balanced recommendations that support departmental and whole-of-government objectives. Essential to this role will be the ability to translate complex legal and governance requirements into clear, practical and strategic advice that supports informed decision-making.

Key responsibilities include:

• Liaise and negotiate with a range of internal clients, external stakeholders (including State departments, Commonwealth government agencies and the private sector) and develop and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Work collaboratively with external legal providers (including Crown Law and private law firms) to ensure value for money, quality and timeliness of work produced.
• Provide legal and strategic advice to the Minister and Director-General on  departmental initiatives.
• Provide expert advice to the Deputy Director-General, and senior leaders on risk, governance, integrity matters required to enable departmental and whole-of- government outcomes to be achieved in in compliance with significant governance requirements.

Mandatory Credentials

Applicants must:

• Be a lawyer admitted to practice for a minimum of five years.
• Hold, or be immediately eligible to obtain, a current Queensland practising certificate.
• Provide evidence of legal qualifications, with original qualifications available for sighting prior to appointment.
• Meet all Queensland Government employment eligibility requirements, including the right to work in Australia.

Highly Desirable

• Possession of a current Queensland C Class Driver Licence.
