About the Role
The PICU Fellow role provides exceptional senior PICU trainees an opportunity to act in the intensive care specialist role.
The PICU Fellows will be exposed to the entire range of paediatric patients requiring intensive care including oncology, burns, trauma, cardiac, extracorporeal life support and organ transplantation.
PICU Fellows will participate in the CHQRS where they will provide both retrieval coordination and patient transports and contribute to clinical governance tasks.
When working in the role of “Acting SMO” in PICU or CHQRS the PICU fellow will be supervised by an SMO and will be making clinical decisions in close consultation with the respective SMO.
The PICU Fellow role fulfils the criteria and has been approved by the College of Intensive Care Medicine for the “Transitional Year” as outlined in the CICM guidelines.
You will fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment with the CHQ values and as outlined in the following:
- Deliver medical services through participation in clinical duties at the PICU Fellow level and in accordance with the CHQ, PICU and CHQRS policies and clinical practice guidelines.
- Demonstrate clinical leadership in a high functioning multidisciplinary and -professional team conjointly managing the care of patients admitted to the PICU or referred to CHQRS.
- Display behaviours favourable for teaming i.e. respectful speaking and listening, commitment-based collaboration, clinical courage, standing by mistakes, and ongoing reflection on actions and outcomes.
- Conduct handovers and ward rounds, assess patients, plan clinical management, and arrange appropriate investigations and treatment while ensuring that all discussions, decision and actions are appropriately documented in the electronic medical records.
- Ensure that the supervising SMO is kept appropriately informed of any significant change in the condition of their patients.
- Maintain close collaboration with PICU nursing, allied health and administrative staff who are an essential part of the PICU multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure and document that patients and parents/families/caregivers are well informed about clinical management and decision making.
