In 2027, our Secondary Campus is implementing a coordinated Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), bringing together inclusion, flexible learning, academic intervention, student engagement and wellbeing.

Our position is simple: Inclusion is everyone's business. We are seeking a hands-on instructional leader who can translate this belief into everyday classroom practice and improved student outcomes.

About the Role

As Head of Special Education Services, you will be a key member of the Secondary leadership team, combining teaching, instructional coaching and specialist leadership within our coordinated MTSS framework.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Teaching and intervention: Undertake a teaching component, including targeted and intensive instruction for students requiring additional support, modelling high-quality inclusive teaching practices.
  • Coaching and capability building: Work alongside classroom teachers through coaching, co-planning, co-teaching and demonstration lessons to strengthen differentiation, reasonable adjustments and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Coordinated student support: Work closely with Student Engagement and Wellbeing staff, curriculum leaders and specialist teams to deliver integrated, wraparound support addressing learning, participation, engagement and wellbeing.
  • MTSS leadership: Contribute to the design, delivery and evaluation of universal, focused and intensive supports, ensuring provision responds to identified student needs.
  • Inclusive education: Lead and coordinate specialist inclusion services, providing expert advice and support for students with disability, including those requiring substantial or extensive adjustments.
  • Evidence-informed practice: Use assessment, achievement, engagement and NCCD data to identify needs, monitor student progress and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Case management and partnerships: Coordinate or contribute to complex student case management, working collaboratively with families, specialists and external agencies.
  • Leadership and resources: Support strategic planning, staff development and effective deployment of specialist expertise and resources.

We are seeking an experienced, collaborative and solutions-focused educational leader who:

  • Is an accomplished teacher who leads by example and is confident teaching, modelling and coaching others.
  • Demonstrates expertise in inclusive education, reasonable adjustments and evidence-informed intervention.
  • Can work across curriculum, inclusion, engagement and wellbeing teams to develop coordinated student-centred solutions.
  • Uses student data and evidence to inform decisions and evaluate impact.
  • Builds strong relationships and demonstrates cultural responsiveness when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and communities.
  • Is adaptable and enthusiastic about the opportunities and complexities of working in remote Cape York.
