It is a genuine occupational requirement that this position be filled by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. One of the referees should be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who can attest to the applicant's background, knowledge, skills and experience as they relate to the cultural capabilities.

The Principal Program Officer contributes to the continuing service design, development and implementation of:
- A Reframed Relationship between the department and Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Cultural change processes based on cultural insight and a researched evidence base so that departmental areas can meet legislative obligations and requirements under the Public Sector Act 2022 and the Reframing the Relationship Roadmap and associated Action Plan.
- The cultural reform agenda and cultural capability action planning to enhance cultural capability across the department, and
- Provision of advice and guidance to ensure the department achieves the desired outcomes in the implementation of:
- the Our Way strategy targets;
- the Reconciliation Action Plan;
- the Reframing the Relationship Roadmap and action plan
- the Cultural Capability Action Plan; and
- Closing the Gap targets.
