Phlebotomy staff are responsible for the collection of high quality and cost-effective specimen collection to clients of Pathology Queensland. A phlebotomist is part of a specialised team which is highly motivated, dynamic, and committed to excellent client service and to the high-quality care of Queensland Health patients. This role requires fast-paced environment skills that enable you to navigate the high demands of the public health sector. 

What you'll do

  • Collection of appropriate quality blood and non-blood specimens from clients of Pathology Queensland as per protocols and the prompt delivery of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and collecting techniques are followed according to documented policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with patients, medical and non-medical staff to ensure correct collection of specimens and efficient operation of the Specimen Collection department.
  • Perform operational duties which include restocking pathology consumables, maintaining clean work areas and assisting where the Phlebotomy Coordinator directs.
  • Work with integrity, comply with expected ethical and behavioural standards, respect patient's confidentiality and know the importance of patient information.
  • Understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification.           

About you

We are searching for someone who has: 

  • Demonstrated experience or ability to acquire experience in the correct procedures of specimen collection including the application of established policies and guidelines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and biological specimens.
  • Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement.
  • Ability to actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical environment.
