About your role

As an Advanced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker – Mental Health, you will play a vital role in supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing mental health care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and supporting participation in culturally appropriate mental health care planning
  • Providing basic mental health assessment, advice, referral and support within a primary health care setting
  • Supporting clients with elevated mental health needs in collaboration with the IMSS multidisciplinary team
  • Engaging with clients in the community, including home visits and support across health facilities when required
  • Delivering culturally appropriate mental health promotion and education activities

About you

You are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with a strong connection to community, culture and wellbeing. 

You will bring:

  • Cultural knowledge and lived experience to support culturally safe mental health care
  • Sound understanding of mental health practices within a primary health care setting
  • Strong communication, advocacy and relationship-building skills
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively within a multidisciplinary team
  • A commitment to respectful, trauma-informed and culturally responsive care

This is an identified vacancy with a genuine occupational requirement for the position to be filled by a candidate indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community. Candidates not meeting this criteria will not be considered.
