The Clinical Coder is a competent and experienced professional responsible for accurately assigning morbidity and procedural classifications to patient episodes across a broad range of specialties and clinical complexities. Working across Queensland Hospitals and Health Services, this role supports the timely completion of monthly coding requirements, particularly during periods of increased demand or workforce shortage. The Clinical Coder undertakes auditing, data verification and clinician liaison activities to ensure the accuracy, consistency and integrity of inpatient morbidity data, while also providing guidance and support to fellow coding staff. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Assigning accurate ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes and performing AR-DRG grouping in accordance with Australian Coding Standards and legislative guidelines.
  • Reviewing, abstracting and verifying clinical information, identifying discrepancies between clinical systems (e.g. HBCIS) and patient records, and resolving issues appropriately.
  • Participating in coding audits, quality programs and coder-clinician liaison activities to ensure accuracy, consistency and continuous improvement.
  • Supporting education and capability development within the coding team while maintaining compliance with service quality and safety standards.

About you

We are searching for someone who brings strong technical expertise in clinical coding and thrives in a dynamic healthcare environment. You will demonstrate the ability to manage processes, stakeholders and compliance requirements to deliver high-quality outcomes across diverse hospital settings.

You will also have:

  • Proven experience coding across a wide range of DRGs, ideally within tertiary healthcare facilities.
  • The ability to balance competing operational priorities while meeting strict timeframes.
  • High-level computer literacy and confidence in using coding software and clinical information systems.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with clinicians and stakeholders.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and maintaining awareness of industry developments.
  • The flexibility and willingness to travel statewide for one-week periods as required.
