The role
We are seeking a talented and experienced Deputy Legal Counsel to join our Legal Branch. In this key position, you will work closely with the Chief Legal Counsel to lead and oversee the branch, ensuring the delivery of exceptional legal services across Queensland Health's diverse and complex environments.
As Deputy Legal Counsel, you will manage the organisation's legal risk profiles, offering strategic advice, and ensuring compliance with Queensland Health legislative framework and whole of government policies. You will oversee resource allocation, budget management, and maintaining the high quality and timeliness of legal outputs.
This role requires a dynamic professional who can seamlessly combine strategic leadership with hands-on legal expertise. You will collaborate with the Chief Legal Counsel, senior executives, statutory office holders, and other key stakeholders to navigate a wide range of legal challenges. You will also represent Queensland Health in various forums, contribute to strategic initiatives, and assist in managing external legal providers and the department's legal expenditure. A key aspect of this role is fostering a positive team culture, mentoring staff, and ensuring the delivery of outstanding client-focused legal services.
The successful person
To excel in this role, you will be a highly skilled legal professional with extensive experience in providing high-quality legal advice, particularly in statutory interpretation, corporate governance risk, and handling inquests, commissions, and inquiries. You will have a proven ability to exercise sound legal judgement and deliver accurate, practical, and solution-oriented advice on complex legal matters.
You will possess exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including senior executives and statutory office holders. Your collaborative approach will enable you to work effectively with stakeholders across a large and complex organisation to deliver whole-of-agency solutions and manage strategic legal risks.
As a leader, you will have demonstrated experience in managing and mentoring legal teams, fostering a culture of excellence, and ensuring the professional development of your staff. You will also have strong resource management skills, including experience in managing budgets, work allocation, and external legal suppliers.
