Indigenous Mental Health Worker

Start a new journey with West Moreton Health! To facilitate liaison between the West Moreton Prison Mental Health Service (PMHS) and persons with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island heritage who are also open clients of the PMHS. Develop and support a network of contacts with the community and mental health services to advance capacity to provide culturally appropriate care for PMHS clients with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island heritage.
Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.

About you
Our ideal candidate will be someone who can demonstrate the following:
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective liaison service between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island mental health consumers and mental health providers and/or other services.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and work within a multidisciplinary team framework when providing services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait consumers, including the ability to develop and/or maintain activity, demographic and statistical databases.
- Knowledge of or ability to acquire knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Mental Health Policy, Mental Health Legislation, Forensic Mental Health Policy and an understanding of the interaction between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people and the criminal justice systems.
Mandatory Requirements:
- Vaccinated against, and remain vaccinated against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) as outlined in the Health Employment Directive NO. 01/16
- Applicants for this role should have a minimum qualification of a Diploma in Mental Health, Diploma in Mental Health Peer Work, Diploma in Alcohol and Drugs, Diploma in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, Diploma of Health Science (Mental Health). Applicants who do not hold the mandatory qualification requirements, but believe they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the role as outlined, and will commit to completing the qualification(s) within an agreed timeframe if appointed, are encouraged to apply for this vacancy.
