Your opportunity
This is a unique opportunity to practise broad-scope, high-impact medicine at Bowen Hospital, a vibrant rural facility serving the Whitsunday region. As a Rural Generalist, you will work at the top of your scope across the facility. You will be part of a close-knit multidisciplinary team where your clinical expertise, leadership and decision-making genuinely shape local health outcomes.
This role offers professional autonomy, meaningful continuity of care, and the chance to build lasting relationships within a welcoming coastal community, while contributing to service innovation, quality improvement education and the sustainability of rural healthcare delivery. Opportunity also exists for delivery of primary care in one of the several practices in the community or in the nearby Airlie Beach area. You will be joining a team of Senior Medical Officers, Principal House Officers, Interns and medical students working together to deliver high quality multidisciplinary care.
About the Team
The Bowen Hospital is a modern, well-equipped rural facility delivering essential health services to the Bowen community and surrounding coastal and agricultural districts. The 20-bed facility with 24 hour emergency also has chairs for chemotherapy and dialysis, CT and USS and visiting outpatient clinics.
Bowen Hospital offers a true Rural Generalist environment with a breadth of practice that defines high-quality rural medicine. Doctors work across emergency, inpatient management and some outpatient clinics. The Emergency Department manages a diverse and clinically rewarding caseload, providing an excellent environment for maintaining and expanding emergency skills within a supported setting.
The hospital is staffed by an experienced multidisciplinary team including nursing, allied health and visiting specialist services. Strong clinical links exist with Mackay Base Hospital and tertiary centres in Townsville, ensuring safe escalation pathways and specialist input when required. Telehealth capability and established retrieval services provide confidence when managing higher-acuity patients, allowing clinicians to practise with autonomy while remaining well supported.
Bowen supports medical education and supervision, offering opportunities to contribute to teaching and mentoring. The hospital environment is well suited to Rural Generalist training pathways and to experienced clinicians seeking a sustainable, rewarding scope of practice.
