Temporary Full-time opportunity for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker to join our Redcliffe Maternity Services team. In this vital role, you will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, babies, fathers, kin and families across the antenatal, birthing, postnatal and early parenting journey.

About the role

In the Health Worker role, you will work in partnership with midwives, multidisciplinary clinicians, and community services to ensure care is culturally safe, holistic, respectful and aligned with the principles of self‑determination. Your cultural knowledge, advocacy and connection to community will help strengthen health literacy, improve access to care and contribute to better health outcomes for First Nations families.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be someone who can carry out the following key accountabilities in accordance with the Metro North Health's values:

  • Act as a cultural broker to limit anxiety and improve communication, ensuring information is delivered in appropriate language and in ways that are culturally appropriate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers, fathers, babies, and families
  • Develop and deliver cultural awareness education for maternity and neonatal staff (and others as required), grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and aligned with family‑centred, strengths based and trauma‑informed care
  • Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, babies and families; support health system navigation and strengthen health literacy so families can make informed choices consistent with their values and preferences.
  • Co‑design and deliver culturally relevant health promotion and prevention activities within community settings. .
  • Build and maintain links with government, non‑government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service providers to provide clear, culturally safe referral pathways and coordinated care.
