Scientist Supervisor Genomics

The Supervising Scientist – Genomics, will apply advanced level scientific expertise to establish a new Genomics service at the Pathology Queensland laboratory at Townsville University Hospital. This is a newly formed role and involves supervision of a small team of scientists, technicians and clinical assistants to provide specialised genomics tests.

There is also a strong functional relationship with the statewide Principal Chief Scientist of the Genomics Discipline, and the wider Genomics team based in Brisbane for clinical and specialist scientific purposes.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:
- Demonstrated advanced genomics knowledge, expertise, skill, scientific judgement and ability to provide specialist advice to laboratory staff and clients.
- Demonstrated ability and skills to develop and validate complex molecular assays for mutation screening.
- Demonstrated ability to support the management of staff and resources, to work both independently and as a team member, cooperating and communicating effectively with those in the immediate work situation and the wider work environment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide scientific services of an advanced nature, to ensure the maintenance of relevant legislative, administrative, and professional standards and to meet NATA/ISO/TGA accreditation/certification requirements.
- Demonstrated support of continuous improvement of service delivery.
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
- The successful applicant must hold at least a relevant tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in molecular genetics/molecular biology. Experience in genomics is essential, and evidence of leading a small team is highly desirable. Applicants with at least 5 years of relevant experience will be highly regarded.
- Possession of higher qualification in Genomics (MHGSA, FHGSA, MSc, PhD, FFSc) or equivalent qualification is highly desirable.
- Following consultation with relevant unions, an employee may be required to participate in new or varied rosters.
