An exciting opportunity exists to join the Mental Health and Alcohol & Other Drugs Service as the Nurse Unit Manager. You will provide specialist and advanced clinical alcohol and other drug nursing practice, consultancy and expert advice, supporting evidence‑based care across Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service. The role contributes at a leadership level to service delivery and development, with a strong focus on quality, cost‑effective and client‑centred care in a multidisciplinary environment.

About us:

Alcohol and Other Drugs Service (AODS) offers a comprehensive range of services across hospital, community and diversionary settings to respond to and assist in preventing harms related to the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  The service operates multidisciplinary teams that aim to provide a comprehensive evidence based approach to assist in addressing the issues arising at an individual and community level from the use of alcohol  and other drugs.

The Cairns and Hinterland AOD Service has sites in Cairns, Mossman, Mareeba and Innisfail.  The Cairns AOD Service comprises two sites: 8 Aplin Street, Cairns and Cairns North.  

ATODS Cairns service provides a range of programs and services including:

  • Alcohol and Other Drugs Treatment
  • Opiate Treatment Program
  • Intensive Treatment Program
  • Diversionary Programs
  • Hospital Liaison
  • Brief Intervention
  • Harm Reduction (Needle and Syringe Program) and Early Intervention
  • Group Therapy
  • Education

About your role:

  • Demonstrates expert level of clinical alcohol and drug nursing and problem-solving skills.
  • Plan, coordinate and manage the provision of a dedicated nursing service to meet the needs of individuals with alcohol and other drug problems.
  • Maintain a Clinical Caseload and provide medico-legally sound documentation regarding clinical assessment and intervention and ensure adequate and appropriate case records and statistics are kept.
  • Assist with developing, conducting and evaluating education and training programs for nurses, other health and welfare professionals, and relevant community groups to assist them to develop improved strategies to address the problems associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs.
