About the role

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Principal HR Data Engineer to join the Human Resources Business Intelligence Unit. In this pivotal role, you will leverage your expertise in Azure and Databricks to design and implement scalable data solutions that drive HR insights, decision-making, and strategic planning.

A key focus of this role is scaling a proof of concept that delivers near real-time rostering data using a change data capture (CDC) process. You will help transition this pilot into a reliable, secure, and supportable capability, ensuring data quality, timeliness, and transparency for operational and strategic workforce reporting.

Your contributions will support the development of reporting solutions that improve HR outcomes across the sector, ensuring that workforce data is processed efficiently and delivers valuable insights to leadership to drive organizational effectiveness.

The successful person

To succeed in this role, you will have substantial experience delivering large-scale data engineering projects, particularly in complex business environments with tight deadlines. Your deep expertise in Azure and Databricks, along with proficiency in SQL and other cloud-based data engineering tools, will be critical to designing, implementing, and optimising scalable data solutions, including data pipelines and data warehouses.

A crucial part of this role involves scaling a pilot CDC solution for near real-time rostering data and building and maintaining Azure Data Factory pipelines. You will demonstrate strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills, particularly in delivering production-grade reliability from a PoC.

You will excel in developing and maintaining robust, high-performance data models and pipelines, ensuring they are optimized for scalability. Whether creating new solutions or maintaining existing ones, your technical proficiency in coding, debugging, and troubleshooting will be essential for seamless data integration and driving business performance.

Your experience with data engineering and business intelligence will allow you to deploy cloud-based tools to extract, transform, and load large datasets, while identifying optimal solutions for data processing. Proficiency in SQL is fundamental. Python will be advantageous.

You will be adept at working both independently and within teams, managing time-sensitive projects and meeting key milestones. Your strong communication skills will enable you to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and understanding of the benefits of data solutions.

A proactive problem solver with a keen eye for detail, you will continuously seek ways to drive improvements and innovate. You will also demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and a solution-focused approach to your work.

A university qualification in IT, data engineering, or a related field is highly regarded. Professional certifications, such as Microsoft Azure or Databricks, are also beneficial.
