About us:
Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service provide an extensive range of health services at more thatn 30 regional, rural and remote facilities across a geographical area of 142,900 square kilometres. The Health Service is 95 percent self-sufficient with only a small number of high- level acute services being provided in Townsville and Brisbane.
The Cairns Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Service (CAMHIS) is an eight-bed unit that is scheduled for opening in early 2027. The CAMHIS team currently operates within the Paediatric / Adolescent Ward, and also provides care to young people in other wards such as the Adult Mental Health unit.
The CAMHIS team provides inpatient care for young people aged 13-17 years of age who are experiencing severe and/or complex mental health difficulties, who require 24-hour clinical support and treatment and who cannot be adequately or safely supported in the community. The team aims to provide acute inpatient mental health treatment to young people in a safe and supervised environment during a period of exacerbation of mental illness.
