An exciting opportunity exists to join the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Service as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Officer. The role provides culturally appropriate support, advocacy and practical assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers, supporting informed decision‑making, improving health outcomes and reducing DAMA. About us:
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Service provides advocacy and a cultural link between health professionals, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander inpatients, families, and carers at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service facilities. They can break down communication barriers so that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers can better understand the hospitalisation, appropriate treatment, and discharge needs.

About your role:
- Assess the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families/carers and provide relevant culturally appropriate intervention, i.e. problem solving and practical assistance.
- Liaise between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients/families/carers, staff and other agencies to assist with effective communication.
- Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in relation to their needs while patients of Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service to facilitate culturally appropriate health care and improve health outcomes for patients and their families.
- Provide comprehensive patient management within a multi-disciplinary team by providing information about hospital services, participation in discharge planning, attending family meetings etc.
