About us:

Central Queensland Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Service is here to support the wellbeing of communities across Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gladstone, Banana, Woorabinda, and the Central Highlands, reaching a population of over 250,000 people. With services based in each region, help is never too far away.

What really brings this service to life is its strong network of collaboration. By working closely with local hospitals, Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug teams, as well as primary health, community, and private providers, the team creates a connected, supportive system focused on reducing the impact of mental illness and helping people move forward in their recovery journey.

About the role:

This role is focused on making a real difference in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by supporting their social, emotional, cultural, and spiritual wellbeing during their stay in the Adult and Older Persons Mental Health Inpatient Units. You will work closely with consumers, their families, and communities to ensure care is respectful, culturally safe, and connected.

As a valued member of a multidisciplinary mental health team, you will provide cultural guidance and insight to help shape care that reflects each person's unique background and experiences. You will use your knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and protocols to support the treating team in delivering more informed and culturally responsive care.

You will also play an important role in helping the team better understand each person's needs by contributing to culturally appropriate assessments and offering meaningful cultural perspectives. Throughout a consumer's inpatient journey, you will provide support during care, including clinical reviews and Mental Health Review Tribunals, ensuring they feel heard and supported.

About you:

  • You hold, are working towards or willing to work towards a relevant qualification such as a Certificate IV in Mental Health, Mental Health Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs, or Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care—or a higher-level qualification in a related field.
  • You may already have experience in a mental health setting or working alongside people living with mental illness, and you bring that insight into your everyday practice.
  • You have a strong and respectful understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and protocols, along with experience building genuine connections within community.
  • You recognise the broader picture, including health inequalities and the social factors that impact the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • You're a confident communicator who knows how to listen, advocate, and work alongside others—whether that's consumers, families, community organisations, or other health professionals.
  • You're comfortable delivering health and cultural assessments and contributing to both one-on-one and group-based support in a way that feels safe, inclusive, and empowering.

What we offer:

Total remuneration value of up to $121,350 p.a. is comprised of:

  • An hourly rate between $39.00 - $53.64 p.h.
  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
  • 17.5% leave loading

Additional Benefits:

  • Ongoing Professional Development and Education Opportunities
  • Flexible Work-Life Balance and Variety
  • Generous Salary Sacrificing Options
