About us:

The Cairns Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Service (CAMHIS) is an eight-bed unit that is scheduled for opening in early 2027. The CAMHIS team currently operates within the Paediatric / Adolescent Ward, and also provides care to young people in other wards such as the Adult Mental Health unit.

The CAMHIS team provides inpatient care for young people aged 12-17 years of age who are experiencing severe and/or complex mental health difficulties, who require 24-hour clinical support and treatment and who cannot be adequately or safely supported in the community. The team aims to provide acute inpatient mental health treatment to young people in a safe and supervised environment during a period of acuity or exacerbation of mental illness.

The CAMHIS team work together to ensure that care is delivered with a patient and family focus, and is clinically safe, efficient, and responsive to the individual needs of young people and their families and carers, working collaboratively with stakeholders involved in their care.

Key principles of service delivery include trauma informed care and practice, staff being ever mindful that engagement with services does not exacerbate or add to a young person's experience of trauma.

A developmental focus is essential to caring for young people and their families, including a consideration for the impact of factors such as trauma, learning and language difficulties and neurodiversity on development.

We're committed to improving the health and wellbeing of people in Far North Queensland by providing high quality acute health care services.
