About us:

Gladstone Hospital is a 100-bed regional facility delivering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient healthcare services to the local community. Services include emergency care, general medicine and surgery, orthopaedics, maternity, paediatrics, coronary and high dependency care, palliative care, medical imaging, pathology, mental health, allied health, and outreach/community-based programs.

The hospital also supports the Boyne Valley Primary Health Care Centre. Surgical services align with a Level 3 Clinical Services Capability Framework, performing a broad range of low to medium complexity procedures across multiple specialties.

About the role:

  • Support the Director of Surgery and Central Queensland Health in delivering high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective surgical services across the region.
  • Provide care for acute and elective surgical conditions in both adults and children, with a strong focus on breast and oncoplastic reconstructive surgery, as well as upper and lower endoscopy.
  • Contribute to the education, supervision, and mentoring of surgical trainees, junior doctors, medical students, and other medical staff.
  • Participate in on-call duties, day-to-day surgical service management, and activities related to patient safety, clinical audit, research, and service planning.
  • Work collaboratively within a diverse and inclusive multidisciplinary team, with flexibility to provide services across multiple Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service facilities as required.

About you:

  • MBBS or equivalent eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
    • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Specialist in General Surgery with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (AHPRA). In general, this will require Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in the specialty of General Surgery.
    • Accreditation by Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) in upper and lower GI endoscopy is essential.
    • Expertise in Laparoscopic Surgery is essential as well as enrolment and maintenance of ongoing CPD program with the appropriate bodies.
  • Expertise in Breast surgery and oncoplastic reconstruction is highly desirable.
  • To be eligible for appointment as a Visiting Specialist / Visiting Senior Specialist, a medical officer must be registered under the National Law and incur ongoing private practice costs.

What we offer:

Total remuneration value of up to $289,481 p.a. is comprised of:

  • A salary rate between $201.04 – $219.93 p.h. (VS.01–VS.04)
  • A salary rate of $238.93 p.h. (VSS.01)
  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
  • 17.5% leave loading
